Wish upon a star

Last night I lay down under the stars waiting to see a meteor shower.
I didn’t see much of a shower, rather more of an occasional shooting star across the sky.  Which was wonderful in itself.
Did I make a wish upon a star?
You bet I did!
I wished for more quiet moments like that one and I wished that I could always keep life in perspective – to recognise how small we are in comparison to the greatness of the universe. When we realise this, our problems don’t seem as huge as they were before.
Og Mandino said “I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars”
Yet without darkness we will never understand or appreciate the light.

Nobody wants to be in the darkness but if you find yourself there, remember to look for the stars.
They are there if you just look up (and while you’re looking, don’t forget to make a wish)
At this time of the year when things do slow down, take some time just to be quiet, to appreciate the things around you and… to look up at the stars.

Thoughts on blessings

access to care, appreciation, blessings, death, mental health, mental illness, poor care

This week has been a really horrible one on a lot of levels but for me one of the most horrific parts of the week was the news that 94 mentally ill patients have died in our province.  They died because they did not receive proper care.
It really opens up the conversation yet again about why there is such stigma and lack of education when it comes to mental health and illness.
My heart breaks for the families affected by this.

The lesson taken from this is how truly blessed anyone is to have access to healthcare.  Yes, it should be a right and not a blessing but unfortunately that is the way it is.
If you are not well but you have access to doctors and medication and therapists, you are lucky.
Take some time to appreciate that.
In a world where we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people, stop and look at how much you actually have.
Feeling sorry for yourself because you don’t have as much as the next person (seems to have) or you are not as healthy as somebody else is not going to help you at all.
You are so blessed to have what you have.
Don’t ever forget that!

appreciation, good thoughts, happiness, moments, new year

The thing about new year is that it isn’t really that different from the old year.
Is there really a huge difference from the 31st of December to the 1st of January?  It is just the next day…
What it can do though is give us the opportunity to have a definable date for changing our attitudes and for correcting mistakes that we made in the past.
My mission for this year is to try to find something positive about every single day. No matter how challenging or miserable that day is.

I have signed up to the 100 Happy days challenge.
The challenge is to take a photograph of what makes you happy every day for 100 days!
The thing that I like about the challenge is that it not only makes you look for positive things but forces you to slow down to appreciate it when you have to stop to take a photo.  I know that I often admire something or notice something but I just hurry on by without stopping to just breathe in the moment.
If you want to join me, that would be great! You can even share your happy moments here.  I commit to sharing more happy moments with you too.
You can sign up at : http://100happydays.com/

If you are not into photography and want to try something different, here’s another idea: A friend of mine bought a nice glass jar and she is writing positive messages every morning and putting them into the jar.
Somebody else bought a diary that was way too pretty to use for work and she committed to writing a positive entry in every lunch time.
Although I don’t think that there is such a thing a too pretty for work – we all need a pretty moment at work too.
My husband has taken to singing Monty Python songs to voice his appreciation.
Whatever you decide to do, do it! Choose something conventional or something unique that is going to make you appreciate what you have more and be more happy!

Let me know what you are going to do to be happier. I look forward to sharing your ideas!
