A new year kind of attitude

I’ve spoken to so many people who have started the year with a negative attitude
With the feeling that the new year will be exactly the same as the old one because – really? What would change from the 31st of December 2017 to the 1st of January 2018?
Well truthfully nothing!
Which, depressing as it sounds, is why I don’t wait up for new year to celebrate with fireworks and loud music. I wake up on January the first and carry on with my life just the same as I had done the day before.
Because life is what you make of it.
No change in year is going to miraculously change your fortune.
You want 2018 to be great?
Make it great!
The week is dragging… Do something to make it more exciting!
Your job is terrible? Look for a new one or enjoy moments in your job – like packing up at the end of the day and going home or having coffee with your colleagues.

We cannot control what happens to us but we can absolutely control how we react to it and what we do about it. That is why you will find people in really trying circumstances who are really positive and people who seem to have it all that never stop complaining (shame).
Attitude is everything.
So I won’t wish you a happy new year or a successful new year, I wish you continued wisdom, bravery, courage, commitment and self belief.
I wish you confidence, a sense of humour in the hard times and new journeys starting today!
I look forward to continuing to share my journey with you.

A flying blog

anxiety, appetite changes, flying, headaches, health, illness, insomnia, neck tension, stress, stress symptoms, symptoms

So this is the first time that I’ve written a blog from a plane, so we will call it a flying blog.  And written with a muse too- a man called Marcus who happened to be sitting next to me on the flight and needed to read this over my shoulder while I was writing – hello Marcus!
Usually I’m much more grounded!
In more than one sense of the word. Usually I’m more responsible and my role is to be provider and caregiver and of course therapist.
While I missed my family and yes, even my patients, I have enjoyed spending time not having to answer to anyone, not having any routine or having to plan ahead much.  It has been great although I’m not sure that I could maintain the gypsy lifestyle for much longer.  Actually, I couldn’t take it another day!  So here I am on my way home…
I have learned so much on this trip.
I have learned that I can walk further than I thought I could, with less food in my body than I thought I needed (and no chocolate).
It is quite amazing how much it is actually possible to do in a different environment.
What is most different is that there is a lack of stress.
I know that I am meant to be a stress expert but it was truly amazing to be able to recognise how much healthier I was when I was in a stress free environment and how much stress affects my health on a day to day basis.

We are constantly pushing ourselves to achieve endless goals, we are always under pressure. It is no wonder that so many people end up consulting me who have no idea how stressed they were until they were really ill.  Yes I’m talking about admission to the psychiatric ward.
We all need to listen to our bodies, to really pay attention to the signs and symptoms that are our constant companions that should really not be there at all.
You should not have headaches all of the time.  Constant neck tension is not normal.  Changes in appetite, sleep and mood are huge warning signs that something is not OK.
Don’t accept ill health as the norm.  Don’t keep running to the doctor for medication when there is a good chance (yes, admit it!) that you are stressed, burned out and anxious.

You only have one life. Make it worth it because you are worth it.
You deserve happiness and health.
You really do!

Choose to be happy

This month in the Jewish calendar is called Adar.
They say that when Adar comes joy increases.
Now you may ask how a new month starts and suddenly everyone gets happy. But it happens!
If you have the attitude that something positive is happening or is going to happen and you decide to shift your attitude, then amazing things happen. Your experiences in life actually change.
I understand that we don’t have control over our lives and that things happen that can negatively influence our thoughts and emotions.
But if you choose to be happy, or try your absolute best to be as happy as you can despite of your circumstances, then you will notice a big difference in the way your life seems to work out.

A few days ago, I was almost killed in an almost accident. Well, that’s the dramatic version of the story.  My choice afterwards, once I had finished shaking and feeling absolutely nauseous, was either to focus on the fact that I could have died or that I am blessed to have survived such a near miss.
What happens to you is not a choice. How you deal with it is!
Stop saying but or what if or I can’t.
Start saying yes I can or I’ll try.

François-Marie Arouet otherwise known as Voltaire was a French writer, historian and philosopher who lived from 1694 to 1778.
He had a saying: “I choose to be happy because it is good for my health.”  Even way back then, he knew that positivity had a huge impact on health.
Now that we are in the scientific era, it has been proven that people who are happier and more positive, have stronger immune systems and better longevity.  So it is not only about your mental health but your physical health too.

I hope that you know that you are worth it and your life is worth living. It is worth living in a good, happy and positive way.
Let the happiness in!

2013, change, happiness, health, new year, resolutions

2012 has not been the best year ever for me.   And personally, I am really glad to see the back of it.  I have had to deal emotional and physical rollercoasters, career challenges and family crises; crushed dreams and relationships that have fallen apart and friendships that could not be reconciled.  My heart has been broken a few times and I’ve cried a few tears.

But, I’m still here, and you’re still here on the last day of 2012 to tell our stories.  What a group of amazing survivors we are!

A lot of people have a crazy notion of waiting for the 1st of January to make changes – over the top, often unreachable new years resolutions that are most likely not going to happen.

Maybe we should choose to make our resolution that 2013 will be the year where we are kinder to ourselves.  That we are more open to change and less serious about life – because whether we stress about it or not, whether we try to control it or not, life is still going to happen!

The other evening, we were driving and my kids were singing This is war by 30 seconds to Mars and they were trying to see who could shout the loudest during the chorus –

“To the right, To the left
We will fight to the death!
To the edge of the earth
It’s a brave new world
It’s a brave new world!”

And I really listened to the lyrics and thought about them.  I’m not sure that we should fight to the death, but we should fight for our own freedom, we should fight for our choices and we should definitely fight for a better, happier and healthier life.  Sometimes that fight is only with yourself so when you choose to respect yourself and listen to yourself, things will get better!

You don’t need to wait for the 1st of January to decide to make that change.  Every single day of your life is an opportunity to start again, to stop being afraid, to move forward, to believe in yourself, to trust yourself.

I wish you all a wonderful, happy, healthy and successful new year – may it be everything that you want it to be.  Thank you to every one of you for continuing to read and support my blog – it is because of you that it continues every week!
