A stressed out stress expert

Alanis Morissette, battles, burnout, kindness, self care, stress, The Footspa

Let me tell you something  a little ironic (and without breaking into song, thanks Alanis Morissette):
Last week I, the author of I don’t want to be stressed, was overwhelmed by stress.
And I didn’t need any reminders from anyone about how I am meant to be the expert at managing stress.  Quite simply I was stressed – drowning in my workload and feeling swamped by builders and plumbers renovating my house.

During that time, I was extremely aware of the fact that if I didn’t do anything to look after myself, I would quickly burn out.  And for me, that would mean a major decline in my already dodgy health.
So I took myself off for a massage in the middle of a busy day when there were a lot more “important things” that I “should” have been doing. None of those things would have actually happened if I didn’t stop to take care of myself.

I cannot emphasise enough how important it is to make yourself a priority.
There is so much to do, and so much to be responsible for that we forget the most important part – ourselves!
It is like expecting a train to run with a burned out engine.
No matter how much you think that you have to do, it is more important to look after yourself.
And hopefully you have one or two tools that you can use to look after yourself and to take time out.
[A huge shoutout to the wonderful people at The Footspa in Killarney who always fit me in when I come running into their spa begging for an urgent appointment.]

The other thing that really helped me was the really little things – the people who said thank you, the people who gave me compliments and the people who checked in to see if I was OK.  It cemented the idea that it is really the little things that count.
When last did you compliment somebody? Or give someone a hug? How often do you say thank you meaningfully?
Make it your mission to be kind and thoughtful – as the saying goes:
“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about” ~ Wendy Mass

This past week has been all about me being unwell, my kids being sick, family responsibilities, too much work and then, to top it all off – it has been raining incessantly.
None of these are conducive to getting much else done, including taking time out for myself.
And when I found a bit of time for myself, I felt guilty because I have so much else to do.
I should rather be doing that. Shouldn’t I?
No, I shouldn’t!

Never underestimate how important it is just to step away from the ‘craziness’ of the pressure and routine of everyday life and just do something to nurture yourself.
There is absolutely no point in pushing yourself so hard that you end up not being able to get anything done at all.
My day is filled with seeing people who don’t make time for themselves – who spend so much time working and parenting and caregiving that they forget about the most important person – themselves!
And their number one excuse (and one that is popular in my vocabulary too) – “I feel guilty if I don’t give to others and then I feel like a selfish person if say no to them”
You are no help to anyone if you don’t have any energy left over at the end of the day.

Give up the feelings of guilt and the idea that you are selfish and rather treasure yourself.
Know that you are not put on this earth to make everyone else happy and to be kind to others.
That doesn’t make you a nasty person.
It makes you human!

I promise you this: if you nurture yourself and take time for yourself and your happiness, you will feel so much more motivated and energised.
And then you will have the ability to give to others.
You will attract more positive and appreciative people into your life which can only make you feel better too.
At this time of the year, when most people are feeling exhausted, give yourself a boost by doing something wonderful for you and feel the difference that it makes.

Stop the world, I want to get off!

When I was younger, much younger, we used to love writing slogans on our books… Kind of like the non-rebellious person’s graffiti.
One of my favourites was “stop the world, I want to get off”
I thought that it was so clever and funny at the time, because the stress that I felt at high school was probably the worst stress that anyone could feel.
Well, wouldn’t it have been great if I could have seen into the future and realised that the stress that you experience as a teenager is nothing like what you deal with as an adult (in most cases anyway).
Now as adults, we really want to get off this chaotic ride that we call life!
We feel like we don’t want to be grown up and don’t want to have to take responsibility for anything or anyone.  We don’t want to have to think and make decisions that could have potentially detrimental effects on ourselves or others.
We constantly long for holidays or breaks but then often spend those times dreading going back to the “real world”.
And most people just live from weekend to weekend.

We can’t get off this world, or just check out of life.
But we can do things differently though.  Because if life is not working out for you and you constantly want to run away, it is time for a new perspective.
Yes, change is scary! But is it worse than being stuck in the same situation where you feel overwhelmed and undermined?
Do things differently even if can’t change your current situation.
Change your attitude, believe in yourself and your resilience.
Give yourself a chance! You may look back at your stressed out self one day and smile that you ever thought that it was a problem!
